Agnieszka Balewska

Born in 1967. Polish. Has been living in Poznań since she was born. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań. Graduated in 1993. Majored in Painting under Prof. Jerzy Kałucki and Drawing under Prof. Jarosław Kozłowski. In 1995 awarded a Scholarship for Young Creators from the Culture and Arts Department of Poznań City Government.

Balewska has been engaged in sound and theatre performance activities, drawing art, computer graphics, painting, object and space art as well as art criticism. She has published over 40 publications and texts for her "Verbal Gallery". She has received a PhD in Cognitive Science and Communication from the Cultural Studies Institute of the Social Science Faculty at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

She has had solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad, including: Poznań, Warszawa, ŁódŸ, Kraków, Szczecin, Gdańsk, Słupsk-Ustka, Tarnowskie Góry and Frankfurt/Oder, Bonn, Hannover, London, Nottingham and Tokyo. She has presented her work at 29 group and 41 solo exhibitions. She has published reviews and theoretical papers in art periodicals and magazines in Poland and abroad. She is associate editor of the art periodical Arteon and in numerous exhibition catalogues.

Balewska has attended and participated in many cultural and artistic conferences at home and abroad, including the 14th International Aesthetic Conference in Lubljana in 1998 and the subsequent 15th International Aesthetic Conference, where she presented her own paper. In 2001 gave a presentation of her paintings in Tokyo. In 2002 sent her works to the Drawings - Mobile exhibition to University of Tokyo, in area: Makuhari. Since 1997 has been tutoring Aesthetics at the Institute of Cultural Studies at A. Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Between 2003/04 Balewska gave lectures on art criticism at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań.

Since 1994, Balewska has been engaged in the works of the Verbal Gallery "Duck-Tak". She has been presenting Modern Art of Special Artistic Personalities at this venue, writing analytical texts for each of the exhibitions which are read out during openings and are subsequently published on the Net. The present site of the gallery has been moved from Dom Literatury on Wroniecka Street to a large basement hall at 7C Pod Lipami Housing Estate in Poznań, the same place where the hitherto existing Verbal Gallery has its home.

In 2000, Balewska was awarded a Young Art Medal awarded by the Honorable Jury of the local daily Głos Wielkopolski.

In 2000 she was also invited, as the only woman artist from Poznań, to take part in an exhibition of the best artists of the younger generation entitled "Brushes to Be Feared" organized by the National Museum in Poland at Królikarnia in Warsaw.

In 2004, She received a scholarship from the Minister of Culture RP.

Balewska was also included in a "touring" exhibition "Figureheads" short listed, as the only woman artist from a group of fourteen artists, by art historians.

She has also been chosen for an entry in the publication Who is Who in Poland published in Switzerland.

Since 2001 She has been engaged in the works of the Research and Artistic Study DUCK - ART and in teaching art theory and practice. She still runs "Verbal Gallery DUCK - TAK" and "Studio DUCK - ART.",
